Victory for Labour in Rutherglen and Hamilton West gives party cautious hope for bigger battles ahead

Labour went big on the earthquake metaphors after winning the Rutherglen and Hamilton West byelection with a 20% swing.

It no doubt felt seismic and earth-shattering for the party after its troubles in Scotland for more than a decade and the seemingly unbreakable dominance of the Scottish National party.

Mo Yan is widely celebrated in China but now faces a lawsuit accusing him of smearing the Communist party amid an increasingly febrile atmosphere online At first glance, a Nobel prize winning author, a bottle of green tea and Beijing’s Tsinghua University have little in common.
