Australia’s Olympic football hopes on a knife edge after USA record comfortable win

Matildas waiting on other results to go their way after 2-1 defeat Trinity Rodman and Korbin Albert strike to dent Australian hopes The Matildas’ Olympic dreams hang in the balance, after a rear-guard performance against the United States was undone by Trinity Rodman and Korbin Albert in Marseille. The defeat left Australia third in group B and waiting on outcomes in other matches later in the day to learn whether they will sneak through to the quarter-finals or go out. The US, meanwhile, finish top of the group and will face Japan in Paris on Saturday. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/wmDMTAU

Backstroke queen Kaylee McKeown reigns supreme with 100m gold at Paris Olympics

Australian retains title she won on Tokyo for her first gold of Games McKeown sets new Olympic record ahead of rival Regan Smith The queen of the women’s 100m backstroke is back. On Tuesday night, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown defended her Tokyo title in a fast and furious battle with Regan Smith. The American had taken McKeown’s world record just last month, but in Paris the Australian out-touched her opponent in the race for the wall to reassert her dominance of the two-lap discipline. Between them, McKeown and Smith hold all 15 of the fastest times in history in the 100m backstroke. Since Tokyo, they have traded the world record and world titles. But on Tuesday, only one could emerge victorious. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/qEcrvus

Horigome retains Olympic street skateboard title over US duo in ‘best ever’ show

The face of Japanese skateboarding edged out USA’s Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston in an awesome display of street skills Yuto Horigome has never been afraid to leave things late. In danger of missing the podium entirely after bottling one trick after another on a sweltering Monday afternoon, the 25-year-old face of Japanese skateboarding roared from behind in the final reel to retain his Olympic men’s street title ahead of the US pair of Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston, who took silver and bronze respectively. Amid oppressive heat beneath a cloudless sky in the temporary La Concorde stadium, Horigome once again came up clutch when it mattered most. He completed a flawless slide down the 10-stair round rail on his fifth and final trick to slide into gold position by a tenth of a point over Eaton, a bronze medalist three years ago in Tokyo . The near-perfect score of 97.08 left the door open for both Americans, but each wiped out on his final attempt to the relief of Horigome, who became

Pressure is something USA’s basketball stars apply to others – they’re having fun

Kevin Durant, LeBron James and co dismantle their world No 4-ranked Serbian opponents in a riotous Paris Olympics pantomime Perhaps the pivotal moment in this game – tonally, if not competitively – came right at the end of the third quarter. Anthony Edwards sends Nikola Jovic to the shoe shop with an outrageous feint and slip, drains a simple two, and as he peels away he sees pretty much the entire bench doing impressions of him, spinning and reeling, consumed in fits of laughter. That, in hindsight, was probably the point at which a potentially tricky Olympic basketball opener against the world’s No 4 side dissolved fully into riotous, uproarious pantomime. So no, it’s fair to say Team USA did not get the memo. They are not burdened by your expectations. They are not keeping themselves up at night worrying about how they measure up against 1992. They have not been reading your angsty tweets (with the exception of KD, who almost certainly has ). The result: three quarters of pure bus

Matildas stay alive after late winner settles chaotic 11-goal Olympic thriller with Zambia

Matildas fight back from 5-2 down to win 6-5 at Stade de Nice Substitute Michelle Heyman snatches victory in 90th minute The greatest escape? In the history of international football, there have been comebacks. There have been thrillers. And then there was whatever the hell played out between Zambia and Australia in Nice. The Matildas recovered from a three-goal deficit, a hat-trick from Zambian sensation Barbra Banda and a brace from the most expensive signing in women’s football Racheal Kundananji, to somehow emerge victorious on Sunday night. If the Matildas needed a heart attack to restart their Olympic campaign, they got it – and the three points that might just keep them at Paris 2024 beyond the group stage. Dazzling Antoine Dupont and France storm to gold in Olympic rugby sevens

Final: France 28-7 Fiji Gamble pays off for Dupont as France bring home gold Glory be, what a game. France won their first gold medal of the 2024 Olympics on Saturday night, in a ring-a-ding, rope-a-dope 28-7 victory against Fiji. It was all orchestrated by (who else but?) that man Antoine Dupont. He made one try and scored two more, in a performance that will go down in Olympic history. He did it in front of a delirious crowd of almost 80,000 French fans, the largest assembled at a sevens game. President Emmanuel Macron was right there in the middle of them. You could just about make out the golden tint of the reflected glory beaming off his brilliant white teeth as he grinned down from the balcony. Netanyahu is presiding over a sharp decline in the US’s pro-Israel consensus

About half of Democrats in Congress boycotted the PM’s speech as thousands of protesters rallied outside the Capitol Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before a joint session of the House and Senate may look like a political victory: the prime minister of a foreign country speaking before Congress, only interrupted by multiple standing ovations. But the political events serving as a backdrop for the speech reveal Netanyahu’s political career, and the bipartisan pro-Israel consensus in the US, in sharp decline. At home in Israel, it’s virtually unthinkable that Netanyahu could have found such a supportive audience. A staggering 72% of Israelis want him to resign over failures that permitted the 7 October attacks by Hamas to succeed. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/whSogjD

John Eliot Gardiner’s departure could usher in generational change for period-instrument performance

At his best, Gardiner’s take on classical repertoire could be thrillingly alive – but after stepping down from his ensembles following a violent outburst, his career is uncertain It comes as little surprise after the events of last summer that John Eliot Gardiner has formally severed all links with the three pioneering ensembles that he established, the Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. Gardiner apologised and publicly stated remorse over the incident after a performance of Berlioz’s Les Troyens in August last year, when allegedly he struck one of the singers, the bass William Thomas , for leaving the platform on the wrong side, and he subsequently decided to step down from his conducting engagements for an unspecified length of time to undergo “therapy and counselling”. Even so, it always seemed unlikely that Gardiner would be able to continue to conduct the singers and instrumentalists with whom he had worked so closely for

Let’s get physical: the science of dance at the Venice Biennale

The dance festival’s opening weekend, under the theme We Humans, focused as much on gravity and technology as emotional connection Venice, a city of already preposterous beauty, comes further stuffed with art during its famous biennale, founded in 1895. The exhibition has grown to encompass multiple art forms, including the lesser known dance biennale, which started in 1999 and actually happens every year. The dance strand has upped its game under the directorship of British choreographer Wayne McGregor – now Sir Wayne, having been knighted in the King’s birthday honours. McGregor took over in 2021 and has just been reappointed for two more years. He has programmed a wide array of international artists, well known and otherwise, with plenty that is unexpected. This year’s theme is We Humans, a title that might conjure fleshy bodies and emotional connection, but the opening weekend’s performances focused as much on physics, formal systems, busy brains and interactions with technology,

New recruit Leny Yoro impresses to offer preseason promise for United

The 18-year-old’s display against Rangers suggests Ten Hag’s rebuild, and Jadon Sancho plan, is well underway Leny Yoro, 18, a £52.2m signing on Thursday . Jadon Sancho, 24, a £73m signing in 2021 returning from exile . This second Manchester United preseason warm-up offered an intriguing juxtaposition. It featured Yoro, whose CV shows 46 games for Lille, playing alongside Sancho, whose previous action was for Borussia Dortmund when losing June’s Champions League final to Real Madrid. Yoro is the latest recruit to the United story, a 6ft 3in defender on whom the club splurged approximately double Real’s reported valuation to win his signature. Wisdom or folly? The Guide #148: Soul-destroying, sterile and expensive – have arena gigs had their day?

The bland and massive indoor show lacks the sweaty closeness of a smaller venue or the eye-popping scale of a stadium – it’s time we celebrated more characterful alternatives • Don’t get the Guide delivered to your inbox? Sign up to get the full article here It seems barely a month goes by without some viral tweet or news story on the cost of, and resultant lack of appetite for, arena gigs. At the end of May, the Black Keys cancelled their autumn US arena tour amid reports of disastrously low ticket sales. Around the same time, Jennifer Lopez also cancelled her arena tour, citing personal reasons – though she too was struggling to shift seats. And there was concern that Charli XCX’s joint tour with Troye Sivan might go the same way – though the arrival of brat girl summer seems to have alleviated those fears a little. That was followed this week in the UK by a spasm of outrage over the cost of tickets for Billie Eilish’s six-night residency at the O2 as part of her Hit Me Hard and

We need to do all we can to lower the anger pervading American politics | Robert Reich

Trump’s messages to his followers during this election season has had a constant undercurrent of violence My first thought on hearing about the attempted shooting of Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday was “I hope to God he’s OK”. I thought this for the usual reasons we human beings hope that other humans are safe from harm. “They’re not after me. They’re after you. And I just happen to be standing in their way.” “Our enemies are desperate to stop us and our opponents have done everything they can to crush our spirit and to break our will. But they failed. They’ve only made us stronger. And 2024 is the final battle, it’s going to be the big one. You put me back in the White House, their reign will be over and America will be a free nation once again.” “In 2016, I declared: I am your voice. Today, I add I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.” Robert Reich, a former US secretary of labor, is a p

Findings presented at the national astronomy meeting in Hull on Wednesday bolster evidence for a pungent gas, phosphine, whose presence on Venus has been fiercely disputed. Aileen Cannon has taken the sledgehammer to the rule of law | Laurence H Tribe and Dennis Aftergut

The federal judge’s ruling in the Trump document case is a travesty If Trump v United States , the US supreme court majority’s shocking immunity decision on 1 July, left anyone unconvinced that America’s courts are on the ballot, federal judge Aileen Cannon just sealed the deal, dropping a sledgehammer on the rule of law. Harry Kane cuts sorry figure on a desolate night for England

Captain moved with greater purpose when he was substituted than at any other time of the evening This was not Harry’s game. It was not his or England’s tournament either and perhaps, once they have picked themselves off the floor from a traumatic, climactic night in Berlin, they will acknowledge that something has indeed changed forever. The sight of Harry Kane removing his armband, handing it to Kyle Walker and running to swap places with Ollie Watkins in the 61st minute was an oddly moving finale to his summer. This was not how anybody had envisaged his role in breaking a personal trophy drought and ending the hex upon his country, too. As Spain celebrated in the centre circle Kane stood impassively in the technical area, gathering his emotions before making his way around his stricken, desolate teammates. He had hoped to crown his life’s work here but instead all the goals and personal accolades that, the day before the final, he had offered to swap for collective success will hav

Armchair fans merely needed to decide in whose company they would rather spend a potentially nerve-jangling night. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/YUo2Jr9

Tactical breakdown: where the Euro 2024 final will be won and lost

Spain have been the outstanding team but if England can shut down the supply, Southgate’s men can make history Spain have been by far the most fluent side at the Euros, by far the best side at the Euros, and much of the reason for that has been their two youthful wingers, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. They give Spain a verticality that they have at times lacked since their golden age came to an end at the 2014 World Cup and, beyond that, Lamine Yamal appears to be blessed with that extra quality that elevates the true greats. Gary Lineker: ‘Lamine Yamal blows my mind. I’ve not seen anything like this’

The former striker on what he was doing at 16, his respect for Harry Kane and why England are a bit like Real Madrid “I hadn’t reached puberty yet,” Gary Lineker says, cracking up. Then he stops and adds: “It’s true, I’m not lying. I used to hide in the showers”. Talk has turned, inevitably, to Lamine Yamal, the school kid who stands before England’s hopes of winning a first trophy since 1966, what their former captain calls his “lifetime’s ambition” as a player and broadcaster, and has everyone asking the same question: what were you doing at 16? “I had just joined Leicester City as an apprentice,” Lineker recalls. Which isn’t bad, and beats trying to blag your way into pubs with fake ID, but isn’t this. Lineker has watched Euro 2024 from in front of the Brandenburg Gate and describes the tournament as one where “the fans were the highlight, showing human beings can get on even when they’re tribal”, as well as one that “started well” but got a “bit turgid” late in the group stages

Reined-in Kane can thrive despite weird Euro 2024 for the alpha dogs in attack | Jonathan Liew

The most prolific No 9s have not been able to dominate – which suggests a restricted role for the captain can benefit England Last week, after Portugal were eliminated by France, I wrote something about Cristiano Ronaldo which ended up getting a fair bit of pushback from his many charmingly devoted followers around the world. It actually took a few days for the abuse to materialise, along with the usual unsolicited direct messages and the Instagram follower requests. Presumably this is because it’s quite hard to type with your weaker hand. But the principal gist of the criticism went thus: hey, corrupt English media, CR7 is by no means the only big-name striker having an absolute stinker at Euro 2024. Why don’t you write about Kylian Mbappé? Why don’t you write about Harry Kane? Well – for one thing – these situations are not all alike. Mbappé is demonstrably one of the world’s great forwards, assisted a goal against Spain on Tuesday night , and played most of his tournament with a

Ethnic minority England fans at Euro 2024 still feel unsafe and excluded

There is representation from black and Asian communities in England’s travelling support but too many still feel isolated After the Switzerland match , in a corner of the concourse under the Düsseldorf Arena, a number of England fans are lingering and celebrating. Some are cheering “auf Wiedersehen” and waving mockingly at Swiss and German supporters. Others are singing their new chant: “There’ll be no Musiala in Berlin,” to the tune of Ten Green Bottles (or Ten German Bombers, depending on your preference). All the supporters are white, but about 50 metres away stand two young black English fans from east London. “What a game, what an incredible atmosphere,” says one, dressed in the current mauve England shirt. And how about those penalties? “Just unbelievable. Saka rolling it into the bottom corner. We were so happy for him.” Because of what happened at the last Euros? “Yeah, and in the last week. He’s been getting so much abuse online and it was just great to see him stick it to t

Atkinson’s seven-wicket debut puts England in charge against West Indies

England 189-3, West Indies 121 (Atkinson 7-45) Jimmy Anderson claims 701st wicket in farewell Test Like those hippy wigs in Woolworths mentioned at the end of Withnail and I, they were selling limited edition Jimmy Anderson last Test merchandise on day one at Lord’s. The greatest two and a bit decades of English seam bowling in history are nearly over, man, and for a mere £60 punters could get their hands on a commemorative hoodie. How long Anderson’s grand farewell lasts may hinge on the weather in St John’s Wood over the coming days, England having dominated the early exchanges against West Indies. They also did so in a manner that lent weight to the decision by Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum to reboot the Test side this summer, with the newcomer Gus Atkinson bursting out of his cellophane wrapping to take seven sparkling wickets . Democrat Adam Schiff says Biden has to win ‘overwhelmingly’ or ‘pass the torch’

President hits campaign trail in Pennsylvania and vows to ‘unite America again’ but makes no mention of health Joe Biden hit the campaign trail in the swing state of Pennsylvania on Sunday as he tried to weather his campaign crisis after a bad debate against Donald Trump – even as a prominent House Democrat said Vice-President Kamala Harris could beat Trump and the president should “pass the torch” to someone else if he can’t win “overwhelmingly”. The US president made no mention of his health and fitness when he told a loudly supportive Philadelphia church congregation in the morning: “We must unite America again … that’s my goal. That’s what we’re going to do.” Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/Q5ZX1VD

Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon run ends after three-set defeat by qualifier Lulu Sun

Home hope bows out as Sun wins 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 World No 123 through to quarter-finals “Qualifiers are dangerous,” said Emma Raducanu ahead of this match. Well, this one proved deadly. As Lulu Sun, making her Wimbledon debut, became the first woman in 14 years to come through qualifying and reach the quarter-final, she knocked Britain’s last contender out of the tournament in the process. It would be hard for Raducanu to begrudge the New Zealander’s 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory, having made her own celebrated run to the US Open title in 2021 from a similarly humble position. It would also be hard to deny that Sun, the world 123, was, on the day, far the better player. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/CvA45JF

Is UK bucking Europe’s trend of moving to the right?

Labour’s landslide victory gave hope to progressives worldwide but may be as much practical as ideological Labour’s landslide victory was hailed as a beacon of hope for progressives worldwide after a surge in support for far-right parties in Europe, and with Donald Trump currently slight favourite to become the US president in January. But Britain’s bulwark against the populist, extremist tide sweeping through European capitals may be as much practical as ideological. Nigel Farage’s rightwing Reform party got a 14% share of votes nationwide, not far behind the 16% claimed by Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in recent elections for the EU parliament. Emma Raducanu powers past Maria Sakkari to reach Wimbledon last 16

British player beats No 9 seed 6-2, 6-3 on Centre Court Qualifier Lulu Sun awaits Raducanu in round four History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. And for Emma Raducanu, this year’s Wimbledon is increasingly carrying echoes of the greatest moment of her young life. Over the past few days the draw has opened up for the 21-year-old Briton like the Red Sea before Moses – just as it did when she won the US Open as a 1,000-1 outsider in 2021. Incredibly she is not scheduled to meet another seed until next Thursday’s semi-finals. On Friday, Raducanu also found Maria Sakkari barring her path – just as she did in New York. And once again she blasted her out of sight. The Greek was the ninth seed here but had no answer as Raducanu gave a display of counterpunching to make Floyd Mayweather purr before winning 6-2, 6-3 in 91 minutes. Keir Starmer: Britain’s new leader who takes politics seriously

Former human rights lawyer has pledged ‘stability and moderation’ after taking Labour party back into power Keir Starmer, who has just secured the biggest election victory in the UK this century to become prime minister, is considered reserved by the British public. In marked contrast to his best-known recent predecessor, the joke-telling Boris Johnson, Starmer invests the task of being a political leader with considerable seriousness, reflecting a career in which he was previously a human rights lawyer and, for five years from 2008, Britain’s chief public prosecutor. Making his first speech as prime minister outside 10 Downing Street on Friday, Starmer said with characteristic understatement that he would be a leader for “stability and moderation” and pledged “change, national renewal and a return to the politics of public service”. Rüdiger’s treatment a damning representation of modern Germany | Jonathan Liew

Defender should be able to count on a nation behind him but far-right nationalism reflects society’s ingrained racism Antonio Rüdiger was eight years old the first time he had to ask his father what the N-word meant, because the kids at school were using it. He remembers running over to an old white lady in his neighbourhood, offering to help carry her shopping bags, and seeing the look of pure terror in her eyes. He remembers growing up playing football on the concrete pitches of Berlin, and being told he didn’t belong there, to go back to Africa. But these were the bad old days. The dark ages. A more benighted era of Germany society. And of course, Rüdiger is now a star of the German national team in a home European Championships, their best player in the 2-0 win over Denmark last Saturday and the key to Friday’s quarter-final against Spain. Times have changed. Attitudes, surely, have shifted. Continue reading... from The Guardian https://ift.tt/fPXQDlR

‘I feel sorry for Gareth. We have to be leaders’ Southgate’s side face Switzerland in Euro quarter-final Phil Foden has defended Gareth Southgate’s tactics and insisted England’s players should shoulder more of the blame for the team’s underwhelming performances at Euro 2024. Blackburn Rovers criticised after minimum wage reports for women

England midfielder Georgia Stanway calls deal ‘very sad’ Ex-Lib Dem leader Tim Farron says club a ‘disgrace’ The England midfielder Georgia Stanway and the former Liberal Democrats leader Tim Farron have been among those to criticise Blackburn Rovers, after reports that the club will be paying women’s team players merely minimum wage throughout next season on 16-hour-a-week contracts. The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that Blackburn, who play in the second tier of the women’s pyramid, are set to be constrained by a playing budget of just £100,000 for next season and therefore their players, who are all semi-professional, will receive salaries of just £9,000. It is understood those reported numbers are consistent with the contract terms that have been discussed with several prospective players this summer, and that such salaries have previously been commonplace at the club in previous seasons. The Labour leader said the Post Office minister, Kevin Hollinrake, should “get on with the job” of sorting out the problem that is believed to have hit Scotland, where the school holidays have already started, particularly badly. Bellingham’s overload of alpha energy is part of England’s Euros instability | Barney Ronay

While Uefa look at the player’s crotch-grabbing antics, Gareth Southgate must harness his game-changing instinct It’s day 19 in the Euro 2024 Haus. Cristiano Ronaldo has finally pared his entire on-field performance down to a series of viral reaction memes. German police are to be given tasers and sniper rifles to deal with a raised threat of beaming, selfie-grabbing children whose parents need to have a look at themselves. And a formal investigation is under way into whether Jude Bellingham grabbing his imaginary balls really is a private joke among his friends or an insult to Slovakian manhood. In fact only one of these statements is demonstrably true at the time of writing. But it does raise many other lines of inquiry. What kind of investigation is this exactly? What kind of friends are we talking about here? And what is the chance any sanction for breaching “decent human conduct” (Uefa translation: racism, arguably no; dick gesture, zero tolerance) will be delayed until after t
